This Is Us’ Jack & Rebecca Are Not Happy Campers in New Season 2 Photos

Brace yourself for some potentially bad news, guys — NBC just released the first official photos from Season 2 of everyone’s favorite tear-jerking dramedy, This Is Us, and things aren’t looking good for our heroes. And by heroes, we’re clearly talking about the couple at the heart of the show: Jack and Rebecca Pearson.

Of course, we all knew things weren’t perfect coming into the second season. In fact, Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) had one heck of a fight — really, a series of fights — that led to Jack leaving in the Season 1 finale.

So, where do things stand with the adorable duo now? Let’s just say that, judging by these photos, it looks like they probably aren’t going to reconcile right out of the gate.

In the first teaser photo, Jack sits in his car, staring out at something or someone. The look on his face makes it clear that he is not happy. Angry or sad? Yep, those emotions match his face much better in this frame.

A second photo with Jack shows him sitting in a diner, presumably by himself, drinking a hot cup of coffee and lost in thought. Sigh. It doesn’t seem right for Jack Pearson to cry in his cuppa all alone.

Wondering where Rebecca is?

NBC shared two photos of the Pearson family matriarch as well. In the first, she is sitting on the bed reading a book. Of course, this is the bed she and Jack would normally share, but the side opposite Rebecca looks woefully vacant. And is it just us, or does she look like she’s a nanosecond away from bursting into tears?

Happily, Rebecca appears far less forlorn in her second photo. Rather, she seems to be mid-laughter as she sits in the movie theater with the now-teenage Big Three: Kevin, Randall and Kate.

Still, the photo is tinged with sadness — the first and most obvious reason, obviously, being that Jack is nowhere to be seen. Has he already died at this point (cue all the tears)? Or will it take that long for him and Rebecca to work things out? We need another option, please.

It’s also impossible not to notice that Kate, unlike her mother and brothers, does not seem pumped to be on this movie outing. Although, if it’s any consolation, adult Kate does look pretty darn happy in another teaser photo from the new season…

Yowza!

But, seriously, fans need to know where Jack and Rebecca stand, stat. Why must NBC toy with our emotions so? Should we go ahead and buy stock in Kleenex now?

This Is Us returns on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 9/8c on NBC.
