Idris Elba Proposed to His Girlfriend in Such a Hollywood Way

As you may have heard, congrats are in order for Idris Elba and his girlfriend fiancée Sabrina Dhowre. What you may not have heard is how Elba popped the question — and suffice it to say, he couldn’t have chosen a more Hollywood way to ask Dhowre to marry him.

The magic happened during a London screening for his new movie, Yardie, on Feb. 9. We told you: so Hollywood.

While it’s unclear if they got the go-ahead from Elba first (here’s hoping they did), the Rio Cinema, where the screening was held, broke the news via Twitter. Sharing a photo of Elba, the theater wrote, “Still 5 days to Valentines Day but @idriselba went down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend live on stage this morning before a preview of his film #Yardie.”

When a fan commented on the post asking for details, the theater replied, “She said yes and there was so much clapping and cheering.”

This account of events was corroborated by Sainou talent agency’s managing director and agent, David Marsden, who posted video footage of the proposal on Instagram. In the caption, he explained, “When you turn up to the #Yardie screening with @sainoutalent clients @adnanmust & @akin.gazi and the director @idriselba steals the show with a #marriageproposal.”

Marsden emphasized his happiness for the newly engaged couple by adding the hashtags, “#congratulations #love #marriage.”

It’s not entirely surprising Elba would ask Dhowre to marry him — they’ve been practically inseparable since meeting and falling in love while Elba was filming The Mountain Between Us. The couple’s adorable displays of affection paired with Elba gushing about her to the press make their special connection obvious.

Of course, that doesn’t make the news any easier to digest for the countless Elba fans carrying a flame for the dashing actor-director. Judging by these tweets, they’re (read: all of us are) taking it pretty hard.

All joking aside, though, best wishes to Elba and Dhowre!
